Is camping along the Russian River - not at a pay site - legal? - russian river canoeing
I am planning a camping trip and canoeing on the Russian River in Sonoma County, California. I do not want a public (paying) site, but want to camp along the river or a river island. I know that the land is public - but it is legal?

No, it is not. There are a number of points on the river are in private ownership, if you do this, but you can still register and pay.
It is only illegal if they catch you.
